about

After college, from June 2000-January 2001 I lived in Budapest, travelled quite a bit in the countryside of Hungary, and also to France, Germany, Bosnia, and Croatia. My friend Paul Kikuchi and I lived together and made lots of music. We had my four track, his drum set, my guitar, some percussion instruments, and an old upright piano that came with our Budapest flat. It was a very creative time, but also a very sad time. I was feeling the real possibility of my mom's death from cancer, and not knowing what to do with my life. Trying to exorcise it in songs. Trying to be silly. Getting drunk too much. Trying new things. Being dumb kids. Some good music though, listening back. It all brings me back. I'm so glad I recorded this. Nearly everything on here is my singing and instrumentation, with the exception of some vocals from Paul on Bottle's Been Broken. Thanks to Paul Kikuchi for keeping these recordings and sending to me, otherwise I probably would have lost them forever.

The last track is not by me, but by my grandfather I never met who was also a musician and grew up in Budapest.

Some notes on language & themes: I've learned a lot since I was the 22 year old writing and recording this. I wouldn't use the word "retarded" in any way anymore, and there are a couple references to violence against women-- the first track fits the mold of songs about murders of women that is all too common in music history of songs written by men. The Bottle's Been Broken song says "just let me come in, I swear I won't hit you." Also things I wouldn't create today.
